Mission 19
This was the Group's third mission for the day. This was an afternoon make-up mission for the 8th's failed attempt earlier that morning. This time the mission would be led by Pathfinders. A reassessment of the day's events thus far concluded that the targets south and east of the invasion forces needed to be bombed. The 492nd was given a transportation choke point at Vire, France. They left at 1650.
The Group dispatched 22 ships, but two of them had to abort.
Fighter Protection
The Group had plenty of escort fighters, as every available fighter was put into the air.
Enemy Resistance
Just like the rest of the day's missions, there was no resistance of any kind.
Bombsight
The Pathfinder marked the spot and the Group hit the target. One of the ships couldn't drop due to a mechanical problem.
Returning Home
The returning crews reported a veritable bridge of boats across the Channel from Southern England to Normandy.
Epilogue
The Group racked up 71 sorties during D-Day. The crews were well aware that this day marked the beginning of the end for Hitler's Europe.
