Nutt Crew R-28 Summary
The Nutt Replacement Crew R-28 arrived in North Pickenham during July. After their orientation they were assigned to the 856th BS. We don't know which crew they replaced nor the crew designation assigned to them.
According to our count, they flew 8 missions for the 492nd.
Their first mission has an interesting story. Since it was their maiden mission, the operation planners put them in the slot element, behind the lead element, thus surrounding them by the experienced crews. As things turned out, every plane in the lead element had to abort the mission as well as the leader of the element the Nutt Crew was in. The situation created by the four aborts put Lt Nutt as leader of the B Section. Not only was it his first mission, but it went into Germany. The mission was completed without any trouble.
When the Group was disbanded on 10 August 44, the Nutt Crew was transferred to Cheddington to do night leaflet droppings. This was the old 858th BS that was cut from the Group during June. Shortly after arriving, the leaflet squadron was redesignated as the 406th Night Leaflet Squadron (NLS). Later on, the 406th NLS became part of the new 492nd BG, formerly known as the 801st Provisional BG aka the Carpetbaggers.
