Folded Wings and Still Flying pages

Two new pages have been added to our website's menu bar to the left: Folded Wings and Still Flying.

Folded Wings is a listing of veterans of the 492nd Bomb Group and members of the 492nd Bomb Group Association known to have passed away. The page consists of names that we've been made aware of since we launched this website in 2005. Many other folded wings have been published in issues of the Happy Warrior newsletter. We hope to get around to transcribing those someday.

Still Flying is a listing of veterans of the 492nd Bomb Group known to still be with us. Over the years we've found that many visitors to this website want to know if a particular vet is still around or if anyone from their loved one's crew is still kicking. This list may help.

Of course, the accuracy of these listings will depend on the timeliness of information getting to us. When we hear of a 492nd veteran's demise, we'll announce it in a blog and move their name from one list to the other.

The listings on each page have links to that person's bio page, if one exists, and to the principal crew page for them.

Inform us...
Please don't hesitate to let us know of any additions or corrections that need to be made to these pages. The easiest way to do so is by using the comment form below this blog. Just let us know the veteran's name, position and crew and on which list he needs to be placed. It would probably be appropriate to check the make this comment private checkbox, as the information you give us does not likely need to be publicly visible.

What a wonderful website. My father, Williston J. O'Connell was a member of the 712-Scott crew. My father passed away on August 5, 1980. I wish this could be added to the "Folded Wings". He stayed in San Antonio, Texas after the war. He so respected his pilot Robertson Scott that he named my brother Scott after him. I am so proud of my father.

My grandfather, Patrick C. Presti, was a gunner in Steneman Crew 809. He passed away in Los Angeles on Sept. 19, 1987 from colon cancer. I just found this website, and am so grateful to see such a tribute to soldiers like my grandfather!

I was showing this site to my neighbor and former Nutt-28 gunner Edwin Bean. He is still flying and sharing stories from his home in Rochester, NH and lake home in Moultonborough, NH. He was excited to see this site as I have printed off a copy of his crew and the accompanying history page.

Please contact Andrew G. Jackson (Bombardier, Newman Crew 913) to ask his permission to be listed in the "still flying" group on your website. I don't know if he will want his name listed anywhere on any website, although he was surprised that there was a site out there with his crew's picture, etc.. You can reach him at andyj1917@aol.com Please DO NOT pester him about going to any 492nd reunion, as his health would not permit it. I am his ex-son-in-law, and I am very aware of his physical condition and current limitations. His mind is as ultra-sharp as ever, though. I am not sure he wants his name listed anywhere as still living or not, so please abide by his wishes! Thank you.
