McGowan Crew R-08 (905) Summary
The McGown Replacement Crew was formed at Peterson Air Field in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Crew arrived at North Pickenham during mid May of '44 when they began their in-house training. Our records show that they transferred in a man short. Or at least Sgt Bailey wasn't on the orders that assigned the Crew to the 859th BS on 27 May 44. They replaced the missing Brantley Crew 905.
By our count, the McGowan Crew flew 21 missions with the 492nd. We don't know if there were any substitutions made on any of the missions or if anyone missed any.
The Crew transferred to the 467th BG on 10 Aug 44 where they flew another 15 missions to bring their total to 36.
In a letter written by Raymond Forbes, the bombardier, to the HAPPY WARRIOR, he said that they flew 17 missions with the 492nd. We don't know if he meant that he flew 17 missions or that the whole crew did. Quite often, a bombardier's mission record will be different than that of his crew.
According to Bill McCullough, the radio operator, in his letter to the HAPPY WARRIOR, they flew 19 missions with the 492nd. He continued to say that they flew 16 more with the 467th plus some gas hauling jobs for Patton's troops.
Obviously, the mission record below needs a little more research and documentation.
