Mission 33
The afternoon mission was a follow up of the morning mission hitting the same target. Major Heaton, who had led the earlier one, led this one as well.
Again 11 ships were dispatched, but this time there were no aborts. Like most NoBall missions this one was led by Pathfinders. Usually when Pathfinders are dispatched they are done so in pairs, one as a lead and the other as a deputy lead. As small as these missions were and running just a short distance, it's possible that only one was sent over.
Fighter Protection
It's hard to say what the fighter protection was for the 492nd on this mission. But there was plenty of protection buzzing all over France. Since there were no Luftwaffe attacks, one can easily say the protection was excellent.
Enemy Resistance
The 8th Air force lost some planes on both morning and afternoon missions. An educated guess would say that the losses were from flak. To our knowledge the 492nd didn't encounter anything worth reporting, flak or enemy fighters.
Bombsight
About all that was recorded about this mission was that all 11 planes attacked their target and returned safely.
Epilogue
Of the 11 planes sent out on this mission, eight were from the 859th and the other three were 858th crews. Just like the morning crews, these 858th crews were reassigned to different squadrons. This sort of reaffirms that the 858th was still flying and acting like as a squadron, although their commanders and staff were officially transferred out.
