Back to Mission 23 Mission 24 Sunday, 11 June 44 Montfort Forward to Mission 25
Mission 24
The Group's second mission for the day was a bridge at Montfort. The target was only 28 miles southeast of La Harve. The Group's small force of six planes was led by Capt Pelkey, the pilot for Crew 815. Take off time was somewhere between 0500 and 0600.
The details of the mission are almost non-existent. The best we can conclude is that six ships were dispatched. One report said that the mission was recalled. Another said that they couldn't find their formation. One thing is clear. The mission went far enough to get some sortie credits. How many of the six crews got credit isn't clear. We suspect that at least four of them did, but that hasn't been confirmed.
Fighter Protection
Like all of the missions to France, the fighter protection was overwhelming.
Enemy Resistance
The 392nd reported no enemy activity of any kind. The 44th said they were shot at with a little flak. It was also reported that the Luftwaffe made two token attempts at them. First by four Me-109s and later by twelve FW-190s. No damages or losses resulted. We have no idea what the 492nd encountered.
Bombsight
The 14th Wing, minus the ships of the 492nd, dropped on the Pathfinder's mark. The results could not be observed nor graded.
Epilogue
Good formation assemblies were difficult to achieve in good weather. Bad formations could cause unnessary losses. The big bosses saw that this one wasn't going well at all and opted to pull the plug. All of the afternoon missions were scrubbed. This mission's "Bigger Picture" explains that over 400 heavies weren't able to complete their missions due to the foul weather.
